How can we be half way through November already? This week are beginning our second unit in Language Arts which focuses on the theme of conflict. Using our Reader's Journey Textbooks, we will look at the different types of conflict and read a few short pieces of fiction to solidify students' understanding of the different kinds.
The final copies of fictional narratives are coming in steadily now, with a final due date of Wednesday, November 14th. I'm very impressed with the editing and revisions that have taken place. The kids have really worked hard with their first long writing assignment of the year. We have also taken our time learning how to use MLA format and proper setup for final papers. This will be an ongoing practice for the rest of the year to prepare them for 7th and 8th grade and beyond.
My social studies groups have been very busy researching their assigned pharaohs. They are working on the visual portions of their presentations early in the week. I hope to have the final oral presentations done for Thursday and Friday.
Our intervention classes have been very busy working with basic skills such as skimming headlines, pictures and italicized words before they read. We've also been scanning text for main ideas. We had a lot of fun the other day using context to guess the meaning of unknown terms. The students can now tell anyone what it means when Mrs. Perry stands akimbo!!
