Happy Halloween!! Hopefully, Hurricane Sandy will keep herself down to a dull roar around here so we can continue on our path of learning. Just when I thought my students couldn't surprise me, they did it again! Our second bookshares began presenting on Friday and if it's possible, they are even better than the first round. Several students made videos of themselves advertising their books; others created elaborate "book in a bag" or models. The kids are enjoying these shares so much, they are asking if they can read a book someone else has read because they sound so good!! I am so glad that I am bringing the joy of reading to them. Apparently, it's catching on!
This week, students will finish revising and editing the fictional narratives we began last week. From the rough drafts, I have seen some great creativity. Final copies will be due by the end of the week. Spelling this week will focus on homophones and their proper usage. We will finish reading Racing the Past and have our first novel test on Friday along with a test on Daily Oral Language.
In social studies, we've been learning about life in ancient Eygpt. This week, we will learn about life on the Nile and the great pharoahs. Students will work collaboratively to research and prepare an oral/visual presentation on several of the more famous kings and queens to share with their classmates.
Grades close on Friday for the 1st marking period!! I can't believe the first quarter has gone by so quickly. I'm looking forward to great 2nd quarter.
