Students go back in time.

Wow, what a busy week! I can honestly say that I'm glad it's Friday. I think we've all worked extra hard this week. During social studies, we've been talking about the Paleolithic Period and how humans first lived. We discussed the nomadic life of hunters and gatherers and what it must have been like for them. Today we reinacted the hunting and gathering in an activity. The students were to take on the roll of a nomadic cave person. They needed to find shelter, food and water on their own, while the others were doing the same. Stations were set up with paper "tents" to be constructed, water in a "pond" provided them with enough water to survive for a day (but they had to make many trips to the pond to fill their buckets). Lastly, they hunted animals crackers and were faced with scenarios such as "heavy load" or "lost tracking" and had to repeat the process a few times until they were successful. I'm proud to say that all of my nomads survived and completed their challenge in the allotted 12 minutes!! Some were down to the last 10 seconds! After we discussed the challenges of doing the work on their own, we formed "tribes" and repeated the challenge. They were astonished that the work that took them 12 minutes on their own, only took 3 minutes with a tribe of 3 people!! This lead to a great discussion of how people began to form communities and worked together during the Neolithic Period. This will be our topic of discussion for next week. Enjoy some of the pictures from today's fun...
