Getting Down to Business!

It's going to be a busy week in Perry's classroom!  In reading, we will be looking at the elements of fiction vs. nonfiction.  We will create a graphic organizer to compare the two types of literature and discuss the "big question" What is truth?  Students will open up our Reader's Journey textbooks for the first time and begin looking into the elements of fiction.

We will also be starting our first classroom novel, "Racing the Past" by Sis Deans.  This is a book filled with "truths" that an eleven year old boy has been living with.  Students will create a reflection journal and will write their thoughts about the novel as we read it together in class.  Some days we will read as a whole group, and other days they will read in pairs or small groups.

In social studies, we are finishing up our look at the essential elements of geography and will begin our unit on early humans.  Students will read about the Paleolithic and Neolithic Periods and watch a short video clip about Otzi the Iceman found locked in glacial ice in 1991.

Last, but not least, in intervention we continue to review and sharpen our basic reading skills to prepare for this year's NECAP Tests. This week we are reading "The Speckled Band" by Arthur Conan Doyle. The students will use skills including inference, prediction, comprehension, vocabulary strategies, and sequencing as we read and discuss this classic tale.

It's going to be a great week!!!
